THE VIABLY COMPOSTING PROCESS

A streamlined approach to ensure maximum efficiency and sustainability at every composting stage.

The Komptech Crambo 3400 dual-shaft shredder processing green waste.

STEP 1: PRE-TREATMENT

Material downsizing is the first step in a successful composting process. Shredding or grinding of organics and green waste on the front end prepares the material for optimum decomposition. This process also helps the material retain a greater material surface area which in turn creates better aeration and porosity in the windrow.

STEP 2: TREATMENT

Mixing tall, peaked windrows is integral to a successful composting process. Komptech turners efficiently mix the pile from the outside in, leaving behind a windrow with a desired “chimney effect.” Regular windrow turning provides optimum porosity to increase temperatures, reduce composting times, and minimize odors.

STEP 3: POST-TREATMENT

Screening ensures a high-quality, uniform product that’s ready for contaminant removal. Trommel screens are ideal for heavy, abrasive materials like topsoil, while star screens efficiently process organics, even when wet. Lastly, a windsifter separator removes remaining contaminants that reduce the quality and value of finished compost.

Attend the Viably Sessions on Food Waste and Cleaner Compost

Viably team members will share their expertise at COMPOST2025, offering insights into industry challenges. Join them to explore strategies for compost contamination management, food waste processing, and the future of composting infrastructure.

Session: Localizing Food Waste Processing Through Policy, Technology and Financing

There are over 5,000 composting facilities in the United States, yet only 230 accept food waste. The lack of industrial-scale infrastructure poses a significant challenge in meeting the growing legislative and consumer demands for food waste processing.

Christy Hurlburt, Director of Product at Viably, will explore a multifaceted approach to overcoming barriers in food waste processing, from policy and funding to innovative technologies. Gain insights into scalable solutions, depackaging advancements, and funding mechanisms that can localize food waste processing and help divert it from landfills.

Date and Time: Wednesday, January 29, from 2:00 pm–2:30 pm

Location: Room 162-163

Toolbox Talks: Navigating Contamination Challenges for Cleaner Compost

Contamination remains a pressing issue in the composting industry. While the best strategy to mitigate contamination is at the source, the increasing adoption of organics programs nationwide has raised contamination challenges at composting facilities.

This session, Kurt Schoppe, CCOM™ will explore practical strategies and equipment solutions for managing contaminants effectively, insights into pre-screening and post-screening trade-offs, and how to select the right equipment  to achieve the cleanest possible end products.

Date and Time: Toolbox Talk II, Tuesday, January 28, from  1:45 pm–3:00pm

Location: Trade Show Floor
